European Seniors Friendly Communities

Aims of ESFC

Welcome to ESFC, the European project funded by the Erasmus+ programme aimed at creating age-friendly communities across Europe, where older adults can thrive, stay socially connected, and continue to contribute their valuable knowledge and experience. By fostering inclusive environments and promoting lifelong learning, we aim to slow the mental and physical decline often associated with ageing, while celebrating the rich history and wisdom that older generations bring to our societies.

Objectives of ESFC

1. Active Participation

Encourage seniors to participate in local and EU communities, fostering a sense of democracy and civic engagement.

2. Learning Opportunities

Provide high-quality learning opportunities designed for seniors, while training staff in social and health services to deliver senior-friendly activities.

3. Local Partnerships

Build partnerships that offer seniors benefits in public and private services, cultural and educational opportunities, and lifelong learning activities.

4. Sustainable Actions

Test and implement sustainable actions to improve the wellbeing of seniors, raising awareness and collective responsibility towards their inclusion.

Why ESFC? (European Senior Friendly Communities)

Europe is aging—and with that comes a responsibility. A responsibility to ensure that our communities, public services, and social spaces evolve in step with the needs, rights, and aspirations of older people. The ESFC (European Senior Friendly Communities) project emerges from this shared responsibility. Funded by the Erasmus+ Programme and led by a transnational partnership involving organizations from Ireland, Italy, and Spain, ESFC seeks to rethink how our communities welcome, engage, and support senior citizens.

Too often, senior adults face barriers that affect their independence and well-being: inaccessible public transportation, fragmented health care systems, social isolation, digital illiteracy, and urban environments not designed with aging in mind. But senior people are not only beneficiaries—they are contributors, memory holders, caregivers, and active citizens. ESFC believes in the value of their participation and works to ensure they are not left behind.

The project promotes a holistic, bottom-up approach to creating “senior-friendly communities” by involving three key groups: seniors themselves, local stakeholders (such as public authorities and service providers), and educators. Through training modules, focus groups, community events and exchange of good practices, ESFC empowers these groups to identify challenges, co-design solutions, and take action. It also fosters intergenerational dialogue, civic participation and the co-creation of tools that support inclusive aging.

ESFC is not just about accessibility—it’s about dignity. It’s about giving older adults the opportunity to remain active, valued and connected members of society. With the growing demographic shift in Europe, initiatives like ESFC are essential to ensure that our communities are prepared, inclusive and caring. Because how we treat our seniors today defines the kind of future we build for all.
